Prevention

Slips, Trips & Falls

Preventing falls due to slips and trips is as easy as following these good housekeeping practices:

  • wear properly-fitting footwear that is appropriate for the work you are doing
  • use the proper type of mat at entries
  • clearly mark all spills and wet areas
  • clean all spills immediately
  • watch for ice in cold storage areas and food prep areas
  • mop or sweep debris from floors
  • remove obstacles & clutter  from walkways
  • secure (tape, tack, etc.) mats, rugs, and carpets that do not lay flat
  • always close filing cabinets or storage drawers
  • cover cables and cords that cross walkways
  • keep walkways and work areas well lit, replace lightbulbs and faulty light switches
  • ensure items you carry do not obstruct your view
  • always use a ladder or step ladder to reach high shelves (never stand on a chair or box)
  • stack heavy items no higher than knee to chest level
  • make sure stacked items are stable
  • take breaks to stay alert
