Flagging
Highway workers are at a high risk of being injured or even killed while flagging. This is due in large part to the high speed of motorists and can become especially dangerous in high traffic areas where there’s a greater risk of aggressive drivers. Each year in Canada, motorists kill approximately 20 flaggers. The best way to stay safe while flagging is to:
- wear highly visibly clothing like bright orange, yellow or green
- wear reflective vests and gear at night
- wear protective gear at all times including a hard hat, long-sleeved shirt and pants
- wear weather-appropriate clothing
- stay alert at all times while flagging
- stand alone on the shoulder of the road in clear view
- never stand in the open traffic lane
- plan an escape route for emergencies
- make sure you know your hand and traffic signals and use them correctly
- treat motorists with respect, do not respond aggressively
